Oakridge Super D

The Oakridge Super D on Sunday August 7th was a great event. The weather was perfect and the trails were in great shape. This is about a 12 mile course with 4,700 feet of elevation loss and 900 feet of climbing thrown is in 3-4 small climbs, one long climb and several gentle rises. The starting elevation is somewhere between 5-6000 feet in a high alpine meadow, which featured spectacular once in 7 years flowering grasses. The trail is not for the timid or the weak and it is more like a hard Indie series race as it winds down and around, then climbs then drops, and then gives you super fast trail with "No crash option" exposures, plus a climb or two with consequences if you fall over off the trail downhill. After ripping about 11 miles the final cross hill with exposure had some gnarly bits and some sandy slidy narrowness with awkward ups and one sharp turn and steep short climb, but by then you could see the finish area and were happy to be getting done with it. Matt Jaeger and I rode it twice Saturday, and that second time down really helped get the trail printed in my brain and set up a good strategy for ripping and then conserving strength on climbs. I hit my goal and made the race run in just under and hour 5th place Cat 2 over 40. Mat J hit the podium in his class. Also representing capitol forest were Cory Canfield and his Son Cody.

Living the life by mtn biking as much as possible. My favorite riding area is Capitol Forest. Too many favorite trails to name. My favorite competition is the Super D. Love going to the races to socialize, tell mtn bike stories and compare bruises and scars. LOL
I have a Norco XC bike and a Iron Horse Sunday.

Age 48

Discipline: XC and Endurance Epics, Super D.

Bikes for 2010: Niner One Nine Single speed for XC, Specialized Enduro for Super D and any Downhill stuff I might hit. Santa Cruz Chameleon 1x8 for back up.

History: I started out about 20 years ago on a cheap hard tail cross bike and knobby tires and a trip to the Lake Wenatchee – Leavanworth area. Around 1998 or so I got a full suspension bike and started riding in Capitol Forest and slowly progressed until running into the FOCF group and then started riding a lot more around 2005. I have moved from riding a six inch travel enduro bike as an all mountain bike towards riding light hardtails as all mountain bikes and now on to single speeding as an all mountain pursuit. Somewhere I picked up the habit of doing long rides in the forest and enjoy being out doors all day skiing, hiking, or biking. The local group FOCF really helped get me out meeting other riders and biking more with other people and have more fun doing it with group rides and after ride activities.

Race History: First race about ten years ago sucked bad came in dead last by about an hour on a two hour race course. Not riding and being out of shape did not work well. Then after riding a lot more for a few years I hit a few FOCF super D’s and XC and did not come in last. The last few years some of the FOCF group were racing in a group called Green Line Six racing and I eventually decided to join as it sounded like the racers were always talking about these great trips to races on group rides and at work parties. I figured that racing would force me to learn how to ride faster, further and more efficiently. In 2009 I rode all the Budu race series as an expert (big mistake) coming in near last. Then seven Indie Series races in the sport category and came in the middleof my age category. I tried the High Cascade 100 and did the 24 hour round and round in Spokane with a team. Also rode the FOCF super D and XC race. Racing all those courses really improved my riding and handling skills.

Race Goals: To have fun seeing how far I can push myself against other comparable riders and better riders. Learn how to ride better and faster. Get out and around the Northwest and maybe other areas and ride with the GL6 team.

Favorite Area: Capitol Forest and all 200 miles of trail. Every time I ride any trail or area in Capitol Forest I am thinking this is one of my favorite rides! And in Good weather and bad it is all good the mud and the rain and the snow and the ice and at night with lights !!!

Favorite Race Course: It seems like the worse the course and conditions the better I place! So I have no idea, they all had good points. Green Water for the Indie Series, and the Fort Ebey Course on the Budu Circuit. Sick Puke 09 for pure endurance event.

Years racing: 1

Bike(s) of choice: Full suspension Specialized, recently converted my old Cannondale Hardtail to a single speed- it's been a lot of fun to ride.

Mountain bike history: I wanted a mountain bike when I was about 8 years old. My father bought me a pink road bike. I was heart broken. When I was 20 years old, had a small amount of cash in my pocket as an undergrad student, and came to Olympia to stay with my uncle (Todd) for a summer, I got my second chance. I found a used Cannondale, custom built by Jeff Hames, in Port Angeles after test-riding about 10 bikes in Seattle. I rode it out along Hurricane Ridge on my way home with it, and I've been riding ever since then. I mostly used it to commute to campus during undergrad and vet school but got out on occasional weekends for some technical single-track, and tired out a few guy-friends. Then I became employed, bought a used full suspension bike (from Rachel) and then I started racing, just last year.
Race history/goals: My first two races were at the end of the Budu series last year and were a lot of fun, after those, I decided I didn't mind the mud if it meant riding with a bunch of other nutty bikers and possibly winning a race or two. I raced in the Indie series; Women's Sport class, and won for my age group. Not bad for the first year, and staying busy as a new vet. Over the winter I converted my first bike into a single speed and hope to race in the Budu series with it. I am also hoping to ride in some longer endurance rides this year as well as the Indie series again. FOCF racing has been a lot of fun too- The Super D weekend was awesome last year!

Favorite riding area/trail: Capitol Forest- 8-50-6, though during the winter down towards Porter is better.

Favorite race course: Hmm. The sick puke course this past fall was awesome in it's variety of terrain and degree of challenge in it's length. As well as the weather!

Favorite bike buddies; My canine running buddies; Blueberry and Sarnin (Sarnin is soon to become a biking buddy- we'll see how she does on the trails this year!).

POKEY

Age: 36

Race discipline and Category: XC, SUPER-D, DOWNHILL, 100 MILE EPICS. Beg/sport

Years racing: 3

Bike of choice: NORCO

Mountain bike and race history: I really enjoy anything fast and dangerous. Which is why I got into skiing and Mountain Biking (MTB)early in life. I competed in my first XC/DH race when I was about 17 at White Pass Wa. I got 2nd in the DH and 3rd in the XC. I took about 15 years off from life in general and presued my dreams of being a hopeless dopefeind. I made my comeback in 2000 and was ready to race in 2008 with alot of support and encouragment from my close friends and the FOCF (friendsofcapitolforest.org).I have not seen the podium since but still dig racing and suffering with the best of them. Always putting myself up against riders I know are better than me.

Race Goals: My goals when racing are to see new places, network with fellow riders and trail builders, get faster and have FUN. This year I will be riding both ends of the MTB spectrum. On my Single Speed I will be cranking it out at any local XC race and then putting down some Epic 100 milers and hopefully finishing. In between I want to put in some sketchy fast Super-D and Downhill runs. I will not be the fastest rider in any discipline but would consider myself a solid rider on any trail. So if you want to rip it in Capitol Forest come on down and get it!

Ride on, POKEY

Bike(s) of Choice: Norco Fluid LT for Super D's and Norco Nitro for XC

Mountian Bike History: Four years ago my Dad and I ventured out into Capitol Forest looking for new trails to ride. After stumbling around moto trails for our first few rides we met up with FOCF and discovered Gl6. I have been hooked ever since, and have been riding and exploring the many trails of Capitol ever since

Race History/Goals: Last year was my first full season of XC racing, and I had a blast. I finished 2nd in Budu and 3rd in Indie Series, and am looking forward to a packed schedule of XC along with some Super D's, downhill, and hopefully my first 24 hour race

Favorite Ride/Riding Area/Trail: Darn near every trail in Capitol Forest and the Sick Puke 2008

Favorite Race Course: North Seatac, Fort Ebey, and the Capitol Forest Classic XC and Super D course

Bike of choice: Gary Fisher 29er- Until I decide what my next bike will be.

Mountain bike history: I started mountain biking 5 years ago when I moved to SW Colorado. After three wonderful years of high desert single track and stunning climbs in the Rockies I decided I needed to try something different. The wet, sloppy trails of the Pacific NW were calling. Moved to Oly 2 years ago and I haven't looked back.

Racing History: Started racing last year just to see if I would like it. I did.

Favorite riding area: CF- trail #8, Cortez, CO- Phil's world

Bike(s) of choice: Norco Fluid 1

Mountain bike history: I discovered the thrill of mountain biking when I moved to the Olympia area five years ago. A friend told me that Capitol Forest had primo mountain biking, so, being new in town with nothing better to do, I picked up a $200 steel frame rigid bike and hit the trails. At first I rode only on the nicest, warmest, sunniest days of summer, but with each ride the MTB beast sunk its claws in further until I found myself riding in tire-clogging mud on 40 degree February days and eagerly awaiting the chance to do it again.

Race history/goals: I signed up for an FOCF XC race in 2008 and was hooked on racing ever since! After a few podium finishes in the Beginner category last year, I moved up to Sport for this season. Along with improving my XC racing this season, I also want to build my gravity skills and confidence. I would not be the rider I am today without the support and encouragement of the amazing FOCF crew. Thanks guys!! I'm looking forward to my third season of rocking the knobbies!!

Favorite ride/riding area/trail: Jackson's Loop in Capitol Forest, Devil's Gulch

Favorite race course: Capitol Forest Classic, both XC and SD
